“Lansing sucks.” I have heard that for years about the Lansing area and I believed it. People would talk about how there is nothing to do. I began to realize that I just was not looking in the right places. Within the last few years there has been a surge of various forms of entertainment. I know, I know, we are a long way from being a great Mecca such as Los Angeles, New York City or Atlanta but I am one that definitely appreciates what Lansing has to offer for little cost. The beauty of being in a small city with big city attributes is cheaper cost of living, ease of travel, convenience and opportunity.

Dear Readers,

The sky wept on the earth as it opened a chasm of daylight. Slowly, like time broken down into half pasts, then minutes as I pondered the ticking of time down to seconds. I exhaled and turned into the driveway of the cemetery of Chapel Hill.  I recalled my meeting with a mother, Vivian Bodiford, who was still in an conscious state of shock that her only son had been murdered.

I can feel it coming. I can smell it coming. The scent is so strong that I can taste it. You know that damp, musty, Michigan basement smell that has a lingering effect on your nostrils? It is also similar to that smell that happens when you do not take care of your camping gear right away. When you come back to your tent and sleeping bag a week later to air it out and you smell that wet outdoorsy smell. I know it is coming because I can see it in people’s attitudes.

I'm upset.  I'm actually livid right now.  Reality sets in when you realize that there's a person who ruined the lives of thousands if not millions.  The atrocities that he dealt demands a special assembly, a call for action, a verbal uprising, a civil march or something cataclysmic.

This cruel, insensitive man is 70-year-old Bernard “Bernie” Madoff (pronounce MADE-OFF).  He “made off” with 1 life and 50 billion dollars ($50,000,000,000) so far. In my opinion, he's a murderer and a thief.  He swindled both the extremely rich and the extremely poor.

I was nowhere near ready for the changes that would happen. No more Thanksgiving or Christmas dinners at my parent's house. My sister has since moved to Portland, OR. My father has since become a vegan-like raw food health food militant, except for special occasions like funerals and weddings then the man eats regular food like his life depended on it. It is hilarious watching this five foot seven ultra skinny man chow down on some “real” food. The stories he has about the aftermath to his body are stupendously amazingly intense. I will spare you the dirty details.

November 4, 2008 will be a day that the nation and the world will remember forever. All of those who voted got to say they made history by voting in the nation's most controversial election. But what most people won't be able to say is that they worked the polls.  Most voters can't say that they were a part of the process to help get the President into the White House, like many of the people who worked the polls to make sure that the process went as smoothly as possible.

Poverty Summit will reduce poverty and maximize economic opportunities for all
One medical emergency, one car accident, one missed paycheck, or one layoff notice and a working class family can descend into poverty.

Because of this reality, I would like to personally invite you to join Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm, Martin Luther King III and me at the Voices for Action Network 2008 Poverty Summit on Thursday, November 13 at the Cobo Center in Detroit.  The summit will address reducing poverty and maximizing economic opportunities for all.

No state has been hit harder by the national economic crisis than Michigan. We have lost hundreds of thousands of good-paying jobs. Our communities are dotted by thousands of foreclosed homes. And too many of our fellow citizens face the daily challenge of how they will support themselves and their families.

ECONOMIC CRISIS REVEALS HYPOCRISY OF CONSERVATIVE DOGMA

Since the advent of the Reagan years, fiscal conservatives have constantly railed against any government assistance whatsoever for the middle-class, labeling the practice “wealth redistribution.”  But the national financial crises over the past three decades, including the current proposal by the U.S. government to bail out high-level Wall Street conglomerates, reveal the hypocrisy of their argument.  Conservatives are only against wealth redistribution when the funds are directed from them to the middle-class and poor. But they wholeheartedly support wealth that is transferred from the poor and middle-class to their coffers.

Me2U column

There are so many types of relationships. I thought about trying to list examples. However the variety seemed almost infinite. Of course I could categorize them simply by saying there are family, friends, romantic, and professional relationships. When I look at the words it seems pretty black and white but when I think about how many different ways they can overlap it seems almost daunting to sort it all out. I did not even mention those relations that are developed through the World Wide Web. Technology sure has changed things extraordinarily hasn't it? I am beginning to wonder if that is for our benefit.

It feels good when someone shows appreciation for something that you have done. A simple gesture of gratitude can promptly put a positive spin on an otherwise mediocre day. I have always felt that positive reinforcement goes a lot further than any negative feedback. I do understand sometimes someone might have to just break it down to brass tacks. That may be necessary but uncomfortable, however if done skillfully it can still be a favorable transaction. I believe that you would agree that being positive is good. Am I wrong?

Report Reveals Broken Scales of Justice For Michigan's Poor Defendants

LANSING, MI - Ken Wyniemko was convicted of a rape he didn't commit in 1994. Wyniemko was freed from prison in 2004, after spending 9 years locked up.   The results of DNA test of a cigarette butt and semen stained nylons showed that it didn't match his DNA.  Although, Wyniemko professed his innocence, he was convicted of rape and burglary.   A court appointed attorney assigned to Wyniemko's case had less than a week to prepare for his defense.  The jury also heard from a jailhouse informant who was spared a life sentence for his testimony that Wyniemko confessed.  Even though the victim was blindfolded and the attacker wore a ski mask, she said she was certain that it was Wyniemko.  A judge exceeded the sentencing guidelines because Wyniemko didn't show remorse and sentenced him to 40 - 60 years in prison.

I understood the parent child relationship that every week, no everyday, had the potential of mom being mean. What made this week any different than any other? Being at that age I did not get the connection when she made that announcement about once a month. I would just politely get up from where I was hearing that announcement and send myself to my room. If mom was going to be mean I was not going to be the one to bring her there.

$2 Billion Dollars of MI Taxes Spent on Corrections

Today, the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) is the largest program that state government operates directly, accounting for nearly 20 percent ($2 billion) of the current discretionary General Fund budget and employing nearly one-third of the classified workforce.  Corrections programs growth is a direct result of the dramatic increase in the number of inmates from 1973 to 2007, during which time the population grew 538 percent, or roughly 42,000 prisoners, to 50,000 inmates.  Official MDOC projections reflect a continuation of the historical trends over the next five years as the prison population is estimated to be slightly more than 56,000 by the end of 2012.

Life is a drag isn't it, getting up every morning to go to work? Or for your second and third shifters you have the added pressure of your schedule being not quite like everyone else’s in your world. You probably work at a job that you don’t mind but it’s not really a dream job is it? On top of that if you have kids you have the added pressure of dealing with that 25/8. You love them but you had no idea it was going to be so taxing some times.

Understanding the Sikh Turban

The turbans (dastaar) that Sikh Indians wear aren’t just for show, their turbans are a sign of respectability and an article of faith.
Turbans are a part of Sikh history.  Most Sikhs don’t cut their hair and keep it covered.
Since 9-11, many Sikhs have been unfairly targeting for wearing turbans.  They are misidentified as Muslims, primarily because Osama bin Laden wears a head wrap.
Sikhs are not Muslim they follow the religion of Sikhism, which originated in Punjab.  Turbans are a part of their strength.
Over the centuries they have fought and died  to continue the right to not cut their hair and wear a turban.
Tying a turban is an art and wearing one is a right.
