News Spotlight: Traffic Stop Leads to Narcotic and Gun Charges

 On June 21st, 2012 at approximately 8:45 pm, a Lansing police officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 3200 block of S. Washington Ave. The driver, Lavar Burton, was arrested for Driving While License Suspended (DWLS). During a search of his vehicle, a loaded handgun was located. In addition, to locating the handgun, officers located illegal narcotics hidden on his person. Burton was arrested and lodged at the Lansing Police Department lock-up.

In July of 2010, Lavar Burton shot and killed his stepdaughter, 7-year-old Amaia Edmond, when two men invaded their home on Custer Street.

John Edmond, Amaia's biological father said, " I knew it would just be a matter of time before Mr. Burton did something else."

Lavar Tony Burton, a 34 year old East Lansing male, was arraigned today Saturday, June 23, 2012 in 54-A District Court in front of Judge Jordan on charges stemming from a June 21st Traffic Stop.

Burton was arraigned on the following charges:
Count 1: PWID Cocaine
Count 2: Felon in Possession of Firearm
Count 3: Felony Firearm
Count 4: CCW
Count 5: DWLS repeat offender
Count 6: Habitual 2nd
Burton has the following hearings scheduled in 54-A District court in front of Judge Deluca.
