LANSING, MI -- There  has been an overwhelming response to Capital City Community Action Network’s (CCCAN’s) request for Christian literature, DVD’s, videos, textbooks and children’s books. 
      When Len Hill of Mount Hope Ministries approached CCCAN, they were not sure how to collaborate with their prison program.  The two groups met on May 4, 2007 and as of June 17, 2007 CCCAN has collected 1,568 pieces for the program.
       The books will be presented to Mount Hope Prison Ministries on August 1, 2007 which will be CCCAN’s Interfaith Prayer Day. 
       In the last 30 years, Michigan’s prison population grew at 32 times the rate of its total population.
      Upon hearing the news, program coordinator Len Hill said in a e-mail, “Wow,is this exciting or what?  I am thrilled.  You might like to know we have already had a record shipping year to this date and are thrilled again.  So many thanks to you and the donors on behalf of inmates and their families as the materials change hearts and minds which effect families as well.”

       Rina Risper, Board Member of CCCAN said, “We as a community need to break through our wall of ignorance.  Everyone should be given an opportunity to read but unfortunately this has not been afforded to some.  It may be because of the choices that person made but when you are imprisoned you don’t have an opportunity to do a lot but you can read.  Reading and being able to read opens up new opportunities for families.  Literacy is good for the entire family.  Remember the prisoners child may be your child or grandchild’s classmate.  Their educational success on the inside may assist those on the outside.”
