OPINION: There is a need to make it possible for more people to be released on bail

By Howard Spence

In America, some people are charged with a crime without any credible investigation and proof, then put into jail and left there for a long time awaiting trial – despite their protests that they are innocent... That happened to a poor 16 year old black kid named Kalief Browder, who was detained in Reikers Island jail over 3 years awaiting trial with a bail of $10,000 that neither he nor his family could afford.

OPINION: Michigan For Marriage

  By Regina Calcagno

Coalition Manager
Michigan For Marriage

The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.” Thirty-two states in the union have recognized marriage equality, doubled from a year ago, and more than sixty-one percent of Americans live in marriage equality states. Despite this rapid progress around the country, Michigan lags behind as the people of our state impatiently wait for justice.

My name is Alvin Parham and I am 45 years old. My story starts as an unbelievable experience. I never frequented going to the doctor’s office for annual check-ups because I always felt I was in excellent health. I never had an ailment; not as much as a cold besides an occasional headache due to sinus; so I thought.

Is the Voting Rights Act of 1965 a racial entitlement or a necessary legal protection?

By Steve Horton

Time will tell how history judges the recent comment by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia that a continuation of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 would be a “perpetuation of racial entitlement”. That act sought to end the legal loopholes and governmental practices that had effectively kept African Americans from the ballot box, disenfranchising them both as voters and as office holders.

Dear Rina,

I learned of a court settlement for living victims of the horrific forced sterilizations legally conducted in some Southern states; sterilizations conducted on people of  color, including pre-teens. Because people of color were stereotyped as being lazy, and in large part stigmatized because they were poor, sterilization was an answer to the prejudiced population's hatred for the poor.  In turn, I submit, from my experience with being stereotyped as lazy or different because I have been extremely poor, I know firsthand that the appeal of the drug testing scenario for welfare recipients is a way to punish the poor and satisfy the inner demons of those who stereotype the poor.

BEATING THE ODDS

Dear Rina,

Every year at this time most of us exchange pleasantries and gifts and generally have a ‘feel-good’ outlook  during the holiday season.  This holiday season I feel especially good because of receiving a present in November that  gave me a great deal of elation.  My present is from El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz Academy which is commonly referred to as Shabazz Academy.  This school, located on the corner of Martin Luther King, Jr and Barnes in South Lansing,  has “Beaten  the Odds” according to Michigan State Superintendent Mike Flanagan.

Bellaire Bridge Calls Me Home...from a memoir written for my Dad

By Nancy Allen

My dad was born in Moundsville, West Virginia, the oldest child of Pap a coal miner and Katherine a Russian immigrant.  The mines and the steel mills were always by the Ohio river where the heart of the city beats and flows.  Everything in the valley runs along side the Ohio River, and the only way that you could get across the river to West Virginia was, and is, the Bellaire Bridge.

Michigan Open Carry Law - is wrong...

The Second Amendment does not guarantee that every citizen can carry a gun - this Amendment was written in the 1791, which is 220 years ago, when war weary American's were afraid of the British, French, Canadians, Germans, Native Americans.  At that time,  there was no United States Army, no organized militias, no state police and no local police.  You had to protect your family and home by yourself, by any means necessary, it was a dangerous time.

I’m a father, retired business owner and a military veteran (Army, infantry, Viet Nam).  As I reflect on this tax season, I marvel at how well the elites have convinced us that they, the upper 5%, have the absolute right to rule our country.   It reminds me of the feudalism that controlled Europe for 600 years.
