Wolfgang Puck: Gingersnap Pudding: The way to anyone's heart

Gingersnap Pudding feature a spicy surprise: crushed cookies. Fotolia.com

By Wolfgang Puck
Tribune Media Services

Pudding has long been one of the ultimate comfort foods, both soothing and delicious. And, along with other old-fashioned treats like cupcakes and pies, the dessert has been coming back into vogue lately, with popular restaurants serving everything from caramel pudding (often finished with a touch of sea salt) to bittersweet chocolate pudding to old-fashioned banana or coconut puddings.

Wolfgang Puck: Go bananas!
For deep-frying, pick firmer fruit whose peels have only just turned yellow.

By Wolfgang Puck
Tribune Media Services

My recipe for Banana Fritters seems a perfect way to raise some smiles at the table.

At face value, bananas are among the funniest of fruits. A cheerful yellow color when ripe, they have a shape that even looks like a smile. Peeling them can be, in itself, a silly process, sort of like a fruit striptease. And the peel itself, of course, is a staple of slapstick comedy - so take care not to drop it on your kitchen floor!

Ask Tamara: Out of the Closet!
Dear Tamara:

During a recent family gathering, my youngest brother announced that he is gay. The entire family was shocked, including me. I never suspected that my brother was gay. Growing up he had plenty of girlfriends and didn’t show any signs of being gay. I haven’t spoken to him since his big announcement and am really unsure about what to say or how to handle the situation.

On one hand I want to support my brother and let him know that I still love him, but on the other I am really worried about him. Our family grew up in the church and this is not the way we were raised. I don’t agree with my brother choosing to live a gay lifestyle, I think homosexuality is a sin and I don’t want him to suffer. What can I do about this?

The Reason Why I Smile
By Soltreu

Life is a fascinating journey filled with lessons to be learned, love to be had, and wisdom to be gained. One thing I am learning from my journey of life is my experiences can be my triumph or downfall. My life's story could have easily caused a negative turning point or an early end. I have had some embarrassing moments, but I choose to share them in hopes of helping others. I wrote a poem entitled, The Reason Why I Smile. It is my most personal piece where I share many tragedies I have been through and overcome. I am pretty open about things I have been through because I hope to be an inspiration. I desire for people to see there is a wonderful life even after a tragic moment.

Ask Tamara: Should I Ask For a Raise?
Dear Tamara:

I have not received a raise or cost of living increase in three years. This year we were told that because of the economy annual increases are again, “not in the budget.”

During this time the cost of living has greatly increased. My rent has gone up and my son’s daycare went from $150 to $180 a week. I really need a raise or some type of increase to continue to make ends meet. How should I approach my supervisor about getting a raise?

Wolfgang Puck: A Light and Flavorful Holiday Break

I sometimes top each portion with some grilled, broiled, or sauteed shrimp, fish fillet, chicken breast, or even sliced steak, lamb, or pork. Credit:Fotolia.com.

Last week, I talked about how many of us find ourselves in need of good, satisfying meals to cook at home during the lull between holiday parties. But there's another kind of meal many home cooks need at this time of year: a change of pace from all those filling, multi-course seasonal menus.

Book Review: “I Got Bank: What My Granddad Taught Me About Money”
By Tashmica Torok

We are surrounded by fearful exchanges about money.  We hear daily murmurs of stock dips, dives and anxieties on the news.  We have watched homes empty of families and fill with graffiti.  Our retirement funds are draining and we cannot find the hole to stop the plug with our thumbs.  Our children sit in the midst of this fog of confusion and uncertainty as we unknowingly burden them with our wringing hands and furrowed brows.

FAST FACTS: Celebrating Anniversaries Made Easy

Left: This aluminum tab recycled bag is a great find  for the “green  conscious” woman for her 10 year anniversary on the job.

In 1922, Emily Post published the first known list of traditional anniversary presents and gift categories. Originally, the etiquette guru listed gifts only for the first, fifth, tenth, fifteenth, twentieth, twenty-fifth and fiftieth anniversaries. By 1957, Post had expanded her anniversary list to include every year from the 1st to the 15th, and for every fifth year after that.

You Can Be a Friend!

By Tashmica Torok

Every once in a while, I will stand in the children's section of a book store and browse the selections.  I will pick up unknown books with beautiful illustrations and catchy titles to flip through the new pages.  Sometimes my hands are drawn to the classics of my own childhood.  I love when a story gives me chills.  Those are usually the stories I end up carrying home to read to my children.
