“Tracking Terrence: Six Favorite Flicks”

Terrence Howard in Hustle & Flow

By Samantha Ofole-Prince

Terrence Howard really needs no formal introduction. We all know him as the music mogul, Lucious Lyon, from the hugely successful Fox Network drama “Empire.” An actor with incredible versatility, he’s played several cops, a doctor, a politician and a pimp and has been in over 40 movies since making his scene-stealing big screen debut as Cowboy in the 1995 Hughes brother’s film “Dead Presidents.”  From the womanizing Quentin in Malcolm D. Lee’s indie film, “The Best Man,” a swim coach in “Pride,” to former South African leader Nelson Mandela in “Winnie Mandela,” the Chicago native has had quite a prolific career.  Samantha Ofole-Prince delves into Howard’s film archives to scoop out our six favorites.

STARTING THIS WEEK: "THE AMERICAN": The title is accurate in terms of this well-filmed vehicle for an unusually somber George Clooney, who really is the only American in the European-made story of a hit man who mulls getting out of the business and takes some downtime in Italy after a mission goes wrong. The locals make him feel welcome - particularly one woman (Violante Placido) he develops feelings for - but opening himself up to others increases the odds he won't survive much longer. DVD extras: "making-of" documentary; audio commentary by director Anton Corbijn; deleted scenes. *** (R: AS, N, V) (Also on Blu-ray)

Rating:     PG-13
Bottom Line:     ***
By Laurence Washington
Die Hard Bruce Willis stars as an ex-CIA agent Frank Moses who has been tagged as “RED,” which refers to his alert level (“retired: extremely dangerous”) by the agency. The film, which attempts to answer the question, is older better, opens up with a black ops hit team invading Moses’ home at night. Although, there are about 10 members of the hit squad trying to kill him, they don’t stand a chance, because in Die Hard fashion, Moses eliminates them one-by-one.
