Best Flicks of 2011
By Samantha Ofole-Prince

From fascinating franchises to thrilling new installments, film critic Samantha Ofole-Prince reviews the best 11 movies of 2011.

Like any other year, 2011 has had its fair share of turds and treats.

This was a year in which sequels had a huge presence on the big screen with two of the biggest successes at the movie box office being the final installment of the “Harry Potter” franchise and the “Twilight” sequel.

There were also unnecessary sequels to “Mission Impossible,” “Alvin and the Chipmunks,”  “Sherlock Holmes,” numerous book adaptations, and a grand total of 40 3-D flicks released.

Dying to Live a Lie: How Symbol Replaced Substance in the Black Community

In recent years the James Bond franchise was rebooted, making it more contemporary. And for the better part of the last decade, Jason Bourne has pretty much dominated the spy movie genre with Hollywood’s rendition of The Bourne Trilogy.
“Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol,” the fourth installment in the Mission Impossible saga, was rumored to be a reboot due to the feeling from critics that the “franchise is played out and its star over-exposed” after “Mission Impossible III” was released.

Mother Flippin’: One Funny Mother - The New Year is pounding on the front door.
By Tashmica Torok

Many of us hear the knocking and we dive for under the couch.  I fling the door wide and leave it open.  I love new opportunities.  I love new fresh breath.  I want it to swirl up inside my home and blow the unwanted out through the back door.

We all have some leftover unwanted from this year.

It is a time for reflection.  It is.  Some may scoff and say, it's just another day.  Or the pessimist might say resolutions fail.  I say, ideas do die without action.  The order of the day is lists checked twice.  Santa had a fail proof plan.

Ask Tamara: Should I Ask For a Raise?
Dear Tamara:

I have not received a raise or cost of living increase in three years. This year we were told that because of the economy annual increases are again, “not in the budget.”

During this time the cost of living has greatly increased. My rent has gone up and my son’s daycare went from $150 to $180 a week. I really need a raise or some type of increase to continue to make ends meet. How should I approach my supervisor about getting a raise?

Ask Tamara: Best Friend Disapproves of My New Relationship!
Dear Tamara:

Shortly after my divorce I began dating a man of another race. When I told my best friend about the relationship, she freaked out and didn’t hold back her disapproval about man that I was seeing and the fact that he is white. Since then our friendship has changed. We have been best friends for over 20 years and often talked on the phone two to three times a day. Since I told her about my new relationship, we barely talk once a week. And when we do, I am usually the one to call and our conversation has been strained. I don’t want to lose my best friend, and cannot imagine my life without her. I can’t believe she is acting like this. I want to save the friendship, but at the same time, I do not want to end my new relationship. Things are getting pretty serious and I want to see where things go. What should I do?

My boss sent me a friend request on Facebook and I am really not sure if I should accept it or not. On one hand my boss is really cool. She is down to earth and really tries to get to know everyone on the staff. I think we have a good working relationship. On the other, I don’t know that I want my boss to have access to my private life. Not that I do anything wrong on Facebook, but I don’t want to open that door where something can be confused or misinterpreted. At the same time, I don’t want to offend her by not accepting her request.

Ask Tamara: Am I Showing Favoritism Between My Children?
Dear Tamara:

My husband has accused me of showing favoritism between our children because I spend a lot of time traveling with our daughter and preparing her for her pageants. I know the pageants are time consuming, but I really don’t think that is true at all. I love all three of my children the same and I treat them all the same. It really hurts my feelings when my husband says this and I don’t want my children growing up thinking that I show any differences between them or that I love my daughter more. What can I do to show them that I don’t play the favorites game?

How do I wear that trend-art deco jewelry

This  art deco ring is a great way to slowly move into this trend. Rings are easy to wear and no matter how big, they aren’t very overwhelming

These art deco necklaces  are a great accessory to introduce to your wardrobe. Necklaces may be a bit more involved than you're ready to try if you're new to the art deco trend, but if you have on a basic outfit, a great necklace can really make it pop.

By Aisha Sims

This trend is kind of a subcategory to the statement jewelry trend, however, it’ s a good one to highlight because art deco jewelry is very pretty and unique looking. Plus it could help some of you move into statement pieces when you have something more specific to look for since  statement jewelry  can be a bit vague at times.

Ask Tamara: My Father’s New Girlfriend Could Be His Daughter!

Dear Tamara:

My parents were married for 32 years. My mother was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer and died four months after her diagnosis. My mother was our rock, and really kept the entire family together. It has only been a little over a year since my mother passed away and I recently found out that my dad is seeing someone new. To make matters worse, the woman he is seeing is only two years older than I am. While my brothers have no issues with the situation, I think it is too soon for my dad to jump into another relationship and I really think he has no business seeing someone young enough to be his daughter. How do I talk to him about this without starting a family feud?

Fast Facts: March is Women's History Month

By Anne R., Reference Librarian

It's hard to believe, but Women's History Month is only 24 years old. It wasn't until 1987 that Congress declared March as National Women's History Month in perpetuity. Ask Tamara: To Shack or Not to Shack

Dear Tamara:

My fiancé has asked me to move in with him. We have been together for three years and engaged for almost a year now. We have not yet set a wedding date because we each have another year of school left and we both want to wait until we graduate college before getting married. In a way it makes perfect sense that we move in together.

"THE FIGHTER": Mark Wahlberg shepherded this superb drama through the production process for years, but ironically, he was the only major cast principal not to score an Oscar nomination for the true story of Boston boxer-against-the-odds Micky Ward. Those up for the honors included Christian Bale as Ward's fighter-turned-trainer half brother, Melissa Leo as their mother and Amy Adams as Ward's tough-in-her-own-right girlfriend. Director David O. Russell not only draws superb performances from all of them, he also generates an indelible sense of the tale's setting. DVD extras: "making-of" documentary; audio commentary by Russell. **** (R: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray)

  By Tashmica Torok

A few months ago I signed up for a service called Shoe Dazzle.  It's Kim Kardashian's company that works kind of like a shoe-of-the-month club.  After taking a short fashion quiz, a virtual showroom is created for you that include both shoes and accessories.  The first week of every month new selections are placed in your showroom and you can decide whether or not to purchase anything or to abstain.  So far, I have yet to abstain.

Ask Tamara: My 15-Year-Old is Sexting!

Dear Tamara:

I just found out a few days ago that my 15-year-old daughter has been “sexting” on her cell phone with a boy from her school. Up to this point I have never checked my daughter's phone or gone through her text messages. I just trusted her to be responsible and do the right thing? And although I disagree with her “sexting,” I feel bad that I invaded her privacy. I want to talk to my daughter about her actions, but I don't want to jeopardize my daughter's trust and even worse become one of those snooping parents that constantly checks up on her child and only causes her child to become even more secretive.

TNCP Welcomes New Advice Column - Ask Tamara: I Found My Soulmate and It's Not My Husband!

Dear Tamara:

"Do you believe in soulmates and that there is one person that perfectly matches you completely?” I have been married for a few years and I just met a man that I believe is my true soulmate. We have so much in common and I believe we are destined to be together. Though I love my husband, this new man makes me feel alive. And it has nothing to do with sex. We just connect on a different and much deeper level. I don’t know what I should do about this.

Clueless Fashionista: Shopping Tips: Don’t buy or wear items just because they fit

By  Ashia Sims

The other day I found a pair of pants that were from another time in my life.  It was a time when I was a few sizes smaller.  I was curious about them and how they managed to stay in my closet because I am very good at getting rid of clothes that don’t fit or compliment me.  Well I tried the pants on and they fit.  Surprise, Surprise.  Actually let me make a correction here.  The pants didn’t fit in the sense of how I like my clothes to fit but I was able to get them up and on me and even button them.
