Making a good thing better: These sloppy Joes will appeal to kids and adults alike

  By America’s Test Kitchen

It’s easy to understand why sloppy Joes are a beloved family favorite. The filling couldn’t be easier to make, and it goes from skillet to table in less than 30 minutes. But there’s also room for improvement – such as the often dry meat, too-sweet sauce and the filling that falls off the bun – that if perfected, would make it more appealing to kids and adults alike.

Just as ABC was getting ready last night to show “Tiger King” figure Carole Baskin on the dance floor, the family of her ex-husband devised plans to trip her up – and they weren't difficult to put into motion.

The Plant Professionals: Plant Now for Spring Excitement

By Kathy Valentine

Oh, how we love the first color of spring in our gardens. Bright crocus, tulips and daffodils planted in September and October really lift our spirits in March and April. For those of us with deer or rabbits, hyacinths, daffodils and even alliums are good choices to minimize the predations of the hungry herds, as these bulbs are toxic, taste bad, or both.

Pan-searing salmon sounds straightforward: Just add a little oil to a nonstick pan, get it good and hot, season a couple of fillets, and cook them until they're cooked through and nicely browned on the exterior but still pink on the inside, right?

Pet World: Give cats space they need to adjust to new home

Dear Cathy,

We adopted a two-year-old cat. She was captured as a stray and spayed. She is very social with people. We were told she “hates” other cats but is okay with dogs. We have a 13-year-old male dog who is totally complacent about everything. The cat has started to lay her ears back, meow annoyance, and chase him from wherever she doesn't wish him to be. Thus far, our corrections have been clapping hands with a displeased tone of voice. She will exit the situation but will repeat the behavior later. I've also sprayed pheromones around sleeping areas and tried calming cat treats.

Ratings for each film begin with a “star’’ rating — one star meaning “poor,’’ four meaning “excellent’’ — followed by the Motion Picture Association of America rating, and then by a family-viewing guide, the key for which appears below.

“THE OUTSIDER: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON’’: It might seem impossible for someone to be in two places at the same time — including a murder scene — unless Stephen King is involved.
